Combat de Reines

In the newly built arena in Val d'Hérens, competitions take place throughout a summer Sunday. The animals involved are livestock well adapted to the mountains, specifically the breed of Eringer cows or Evolène cows, named after the valley of the same name in the Valais region. The valley lies near the language border (German-French) in Switzerland. These cows are not particularly large but are strong and feisty. Cow fights have been a highlight of the Alpine year for decades.
