In the extensive channels of the Mekong River and on its approximately 4000 islets in the south of Laos, people live under very basic conditions. Cultural preferences such as the consumption of raw foods (including carcinogenic trematodes), along with a lack of sanitary facilities and close interaction with the river (bilharzia), contribute to the prevalence of various parasitic worm diseases. In remote areas, raising awareness about prevention and treatment options can often be life-saving.
