Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Tajikistan

Abandoned by the Russians, Tajikistan faces the challenge of rebuilding a functioning health system. Tuberculosis is widespread and child mortality is high due to poor drinking water quality and inadequate sanitary infrastructure. The population should also be able to take more control of their own health. Through less specialised but comprehensive care for families (family medicine), all parts of the population are involved and sensitised to health issues.
